What’s the difference between folic acid and methylfolate, and why does it matter?

Methylfolate is the active, bioavailable form of folate that your body can use immediately. Up to 40% of women have a gene variation (MTHFR) that makes it difficult to convert synthetic folic acid. Folate helps to reduce risk of neural tube defects.*
